About Peel Region

Peel Region is part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and is composed of Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. With a population of approximately 1.3 million, Peel is the second largest municipality in Ontario after Toronto.   

Peel Region is growing quickly. Between 2006 - 20011, the population in Peel Region grew by 12%. It is known for its large and vibrant newcomer community, with approximately half the residents being recent immigrants.

It has a good transportation infrastructure as it includes the Toronto Pearson International Airport and 7 major highways go through the region. There are colleges and a university in Peel Region.

According to the 2006 census, Peel’s top industries are:

  • Business services (24.5%)
  • Manufacturing (17.5%)
  • Retail trade (11.1%)
  • Finance and real estate (7.9%)
  • Wholesale trade (7.8%)
  • Health care and social services (6.8%)
  • Construction (5.3%)
  • Educational services (4.8%)

Among the region’s top employers are the Air Canada, Peel District School Board, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, DaimlerChrysler Brampton Assembly Plant, City of Brampton, William Osler Health Centre, Peel Regional Police, Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., Headwaters Health Care Centre and Mars Canada Inc. and Novartis Canada Inc.

It should be noted however, that many Peel Region residents work in other parts of the Greater Toronto Area.
